Buzz marketing & viral marketing

Viral marketing, Buzz marketing, Word of Mouth Marketing

Whether one differentiates or not between these concepts, they come under the banner of alternative marketing, which is used to signify marketing methods that are staggered, less costly and highly targeted.

Buzz marketing

  • Buzz is a marketing technique consisting, as its name suggests, of making a noise around a new product or offer. Similar to viral marketing, it differs from it in the control of the content, of the advertising message (Source: Wikipedia).
  • Buzz marketing activities are designed to get consumers talking about a product or service. Buzz fosters mystery, stimulates questions, surprises audiences and exploits consumption contexts to generate the behaviour desired.
  • Buzz marketing phenomena can be regarded as just one technique of viral marketing, which generally aims to create a rumour or media background noise before the release of a product, film or service.

Viral marketing

  • Viral marketing is a form of advertising where the consumer contributes to its spread. Unlike word of mouth / buzz, the actual effects of viral marketing are those anticipated: it's the consumer who creates the enthusiasm for the product, without distorting the message (Source: Wikipedia).
  • Viral marketing uses interpersonal communication tools to pass on the brand's message to a wide audience, rapidly and at a low cost. The most well-known forms are videos, games and images sent mainly by e-mail or text message.
